Located in the Tsarskoe Selo (Tsar's Village), one of the favorite places of rest of the Russian monarchs. One of the largest palaces in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. Palace was founded in 1717 by order of the Empress Catherine I. in 1718 many famous architects has consistently worked on its creation. The decisive role in the construction of the Palace belonged to the architect Rastrelli. The most famous room of Great Catherine Palace is the Amber room, a jewel of the summer residence of the Russian emperors in Tsarskoye Selo. The amber was mainly used in its finishing. This masterpiece consisted of amber panels, decorations and murals. After the storming of Konigsberg (Kaliningrad, where it was taken in order to save from the Nazis) by Soviet troops in April 1945 the room disappeared Its fate still remains a mystery. To the tercentenary of St. Petersburg, the Amber room was fully restored from the Kaliningrad amber. The Catherine Palace is a typical example of late Baroque. In Soviet times it turned into museum. During the war the Palace was badly damaged. Its restoration took many years and continues now by the Leningrad school of restorers using a strictly scientific basis.
