Dombay is one of the modern mountaineering, ski and tourist centers in Caucasus. It located 1600-3050 meters high above sea level in the Karachay-Cherkessia, in the territory of the Teberdinsky nature reserve. It is located 65 kilometers away from the Mount Elbrus summit and at the same distance from the Black Sea coast. The southern boundary of Dombay is the watershed of the Caucasus. Its highest point is the summit of Dombay-Ulgen that stands at 4046 meters. Three gorges, Alibek, Amanauz and Dombay-Ulgen, connect at one point and form a picturesque Dombay meadow, lying at an altitude of 1630 m above sea level. The word Dombay means a bison in Karachay language because herds of bisons were grazing once in these forests. The name of mount Dombay- Ulgen translates as a killed bison. The Dombay resort is dozens of hotels, 20 kilometers of ski slopes with altitude difference of up to 1400 meters. Annually up to two hundred thousand tourists come to visit Dombai.
