The Transfiguration Cathedral in Pereslavl-Zalessky has been one of the centers of religious life in Russia for several centuries. It was founded in 1152 when Prince Yuri Dolgoruky established a new city at the mouth of the river Trubezh - Pereslavl New (today Pereslavl-Zalessky). It was built for 5 years. The architecture of the Cathedral is very simple, like it is carved from a single block of stone. The only openings in walls are narrow arrowslits. Decoration ornament is simple as well. For eight and a half centuries, the Cathedral was five times destroyed by the Tatars, in the thirteenth century it was sacked by a successor of Alexander Nevsky, Andrei Yaroslavich, in the early seventeenth century it was seized by the Poles. It is believed that Alexander Nevsky was baptized here. In 1352 Venerable Sergius of Radonezh was formally installed a ruling hegumen here in a ceremony, and Peter the Great often sang in the choir of the Cathedral.
